Weifang Medical University
Weifang Medical University is a medical university located in the Chinese city of Weifang in Shandong Province.
The university was founded as Changwei Medical School of Shandong Province in 1951. The university was later established as Changwei Medical College, which offers undergraduate programs.
In 1987, the university was restructured and became Weifang Medical University.
In 1986, the university was approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education to offer graduate programs in medicine. In 2002, the Chinese Ministry of Education granted Weifang Medical University permission to offer postgraduate medical degrees.

Weifan Medical University (WFMU) is a state medical university. It is located in the international kite capital of Weifang, in the center of the Shandong Peninsula. MBBS in Weifang Medical University covers an area of over 1.2 million square meters, with a construction area of 570,000 square meters.
In recent decades, WFMU has established a comprehensive and multidisciplinary model offering a number of disciplines, including medical science, health management, general science, law and literature, with medical science as the core discipline. WFMU is authorized to award undergraduate and graduate degrees and to admit international students.
WFMU is authorized to recruit doctoral students in cooperation with Shandong University, Southern Medical University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, as well as Shandong Medical Technology Education Center and Basic Level Health Care Management Cadre Training Center.
Schools and Departments
WFMU consists of 15 schools and departments, such as School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Public Health and Management, School of Nursing, School of Dentistry, Institute of Clinical Medicine, Institute of Anesthesiology, Institute of Medical Radiology, and Institute of Preventive Medicine.
Faculty
It currently employs 1000 faculty members. Doctoral students have four supervisors and master’s students have almost 200 supervisors.
Postgraduate programmes
There are 24 postgraduate programmes, which recruit mainly postgraduates in physiology, immunology, pharmacology, anatomy, embryology, pathology and pathophysiology, pathogen biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology, Pediatrics, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Dentistry, Neurology, Oncology, Traditional and Western Clinical Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Imaging and Nuclear Medicine, Nursing, Anesthesiology, Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Social Medicine and Health Management, and Applied Psychology. More than 740 graduates are trained at the school.
Undergraduate programs
The university offers 16 undergraduate programs: clinical medicine, dentistry, nursing, anesthesiology, medical imaging, medical laboratory science, preventive medicine, pharmacy, public health and management, labor and social security, marketing, law, applied psychology, health statistics, biological technology, English. More than 14,000 students are enrolled in three- and five-year full-time programs.
Research centers
WFMU has always focused on teaching and continuous quality improvement. It has a medical research Centre, an advanced educational technology Centre, a computer Centre and an animal care Centre. More than 10,000 scientific and research instruments, such as a confocal laser scanning microscope (Zeiss), a flow cytometer (Beckman Coulter) and an image processor, worth more than 110 million yuan.
An experimental demonstration Centre operates at provincial level. At the university level, there are six comprehensive teaching laboratories – morphology, function, chemical analysis, clinical skills, computational and human anatomy – and 16 specialized laboratories such as genetic and histological engineering, dental and nursing laboratories, equipped with advanced PACS image processing system, digital network interactive laboratory teaching system, BL-410 biological function experimental system, etc.
The Basic Medical Experimental Center is the experimental and demonstration training center of universities in Shandong Province. It has been awarded provincial level excellence in anatomy, medical ethics, pathology, physiology, histology and embryology, pharmacology and medical imaging. WFMU has completed 90 teaching and research projects at the provincial level or higher, and has received 24 teaching, experimentation and research awards since 2004.
WFMU has a discipline called “Taishan Scholars”, seven key provincial academic disciplines and laboratories, including anatomy and histopathology embryology, surgery, medical radiology, ophthalmology, immunology, applied pharmacology, dentistry. There are 24 research institutes, including pathology, neurophysiology, stem cell differentiation and cycling, molecular cell biology, urological surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, anaesthesiology, community medicine, health management, epidemiology, health statistics and health economics.
Research achievements
In recent years, the VFMU has made a number of achievements in the field of research. More than 340 research projects have been approved by government authorities, including 16 large projects by the State Natural Science Foundation and the National Key Laboratory Projects, 40 projects by the Provincial Natural Science Fund and the Middle Age and Young Scientists Fund, and 260 projects at the office level. More than 220 research awards have been made, including 50 awards to provincial-level experts.
More than 870 scientific articles and 70 books are published each year. More than 30 results have been supported in continuing education at the provincial level or above. WFMU holds more than 10 national patents and has achieved good socio-economic and social benefits. The university library collection contains more than 2.1 million books and 3,000 kinds of Chinese and foreign periodicals.
International exchange
The University has established extensive links with many foreign universities such as Western State College in California, USA, Haerkefu State Academy in Ukraine, Haerkefu State Medical Academy in Ukraine, Dnipropetrovsk State Medical Academy in Ukraine; RMIT and La Trobe University in Australia, College of Saskatchewan in Canada and University of Occupational and Environmental Health in Japan.
More than 160 foreign experts have been invited to visit or teach at the VFMU, more than 170 faculty members have studied abroad, and many staff members have been sent abroad as medical assistants. More than 60 renowned professors from all over the world have been invited to be visiting professors at the university. VFMU recruits international students every year and currently has nearly 600 international students from Zambia, Ghana, India, Nepal, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Pakistan.
The university is one of the universities eligible to host the HSK.
Admission procedure
Applicants must have a secondary school education, be aged between 18 and 35 years, be in good health and have a good knowledge of English.
Note: Students must have completed HSK level 4 before graduating.
Application materials:
- medical certificate (photocopy of a notarized medical examination report for more than 6 months of study);
- photocopy of a valid passport (name, passport number, expiry date and photograph);
- passport photograph (current passport-size photograph of the applicant);
- secondary school diploma (secondary school diplomas in languages other than Chinese or English must be translated into Chinese or English and notarized);
- academic certificate of high school;
- certificate of English language proficiency test (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL, only for applicants whose native language is not English);
Notes: Interviews will be scheduled. The exact date and time of the interview will be communicated to applicants. Face-to-face interviews will be held with applicants in Mumbai and via Skype with other applicants.
